What is light haulage insurance?
Light haulage insurance is a type of insurance that is specifically designed for people engaged in light haulage – someone who makes either a one or a limited number of delivery runs in a day, rather than one who makes many pre-arranged deliveries during a typical work day. You might have a van or lorry, typically of under 7.5 tonnes.
Cover can be flexible, but typically extends beyond a standard commercial vehicle insurance policy. Typically, you may wish to add employers liability insurance where you have drivers working for you – even if only on a casual basis. In addition, you should consider public liability insurance which protects you from claims made by a member of the public that they have been somehow injured or suffered a loss as a result of your business activity. It could be something as simple as an item falling out of the van when you open the rear door and hurting a passer by.
Goods in transit insurance is a common add-on for light truck insurance. It makes sure that the goods you actually carry are covered, if there was an accident, accidental damage or even in the case of theft. The exact terms of the cover will vary from policy to policy of course. Certain goods may not be covered. Livestock and jewellery are common exceptions, but there may be others. Always check your policy carefully, and make sure it is appropriate to any changes in your business.
There are of course many providers of light haulage insurance, and you’ll have to do your research to make sure you choose cover which suits your business needs. We have access to a range of products from a number of insurers, including specialist schemes you won’t find on the high street. Factors that should be taken into account include the make and model of your work vehicle, the volume of trade you do (specifically how many individual deliveries you make in a typical day), and the distances you regularly cover.
Who needs light haulage insurance?
If you’re in the business of moving goods, whether your own or on behalf of someone else, to single destinations, you should consider getting the right insurance coverage in place. Light haulage insurance can be useful whether you have one or more van or lorries and need to protect them, their drivers as well as the goods themselves.
